How can a new grad RN get a job in Intensive care unit ?
I want to work in these department so that I can apply for nurse anesthesia program : Surgical Intensive Care, Medical Intensive Care, Cardiac Intensive Care, Neuro Intensive Care, Pediatric or Neonatal Intensive Care. Do these department hire new grad RN ?
This will be largely dependent on the hospital. Smaller hospitals will normally move nurses experienced in medicine or surgery into intensive care positions or pediatrics the nursery, then into the NICU.
Larger hospitals may have an educational program to develop intensive care nurses, though often, as these are preferred positions, there is a waiting list at many hospitals of med-surg nurses waiting for those positions.
Sometimes hospitals will need ER nurses and start new nurses in the ER and then move the ER nurses into the ICU.
Also, the post anesthesia units are usually a quick way into the ICU, as the same skills are required in both settings, but some hospitals want ICU nurses to move into PACU.
